Communicating the Company's Vision

As most of you are aware, the US government is in a challenging financial situation at this time.  A majority of our income comes from government contracts so this state of affairs has the potential to adversely affect our bottom line.  We need to remain focused on creating high-quality products as we have always done but I am also asking you all to place a new emphasis on expense reduction.  As you complete your daily tasks at work, treat every dollar that needs to be spent as if it were your own money.  In  a sense, it really is your money as all of our employees are invested in the company through our profit sharing and employee savings plans.  There is no need for alarm as we are still in excellent financial standing as our stock price indicates.  We just need to be proactive in ensuring that we are all doing what we can to minimize unnecessary expenses.  I am confident that our organization will remain an industry leader for decades to come and I thank you all for your continued hard work towards our common goal of being the top aerospace producer in the world.

  1. Alan, I like how you not only tell your coworkers that they need to cut expenses, but you also convey to them how doing so will effect them personally (profit sharing, etc.). This is a great way to ensure that the employees take the message to heart and strive to meet the expense reduction goals.

  2. I like how you took a broad message about expense reduction and brought it down to the individual level with the comment "treat every dollar that needs to be spent as if it were your own money".This sentence alone makes creates a concrete thought eveyone can relate to.

  3. Alan, I think your organizational memo speaks to a plethora of organizations. Whether majority of a company's income comes from US government contracts or not, all companies need to be proactive when it comes to minimizing expenses. When I think of minimizing expenses I also think of minimizing waste. One expense/waste that my company could cut back on is wasting paper. The reams of paper and amount of ink cartridges we go through are outrageous, and I am only speaking for my floor! I can only imagine how much we go through as an entire building. I think if people were to treat every dollar as if it were their own and factor in how cutting expenses would benefit them, employees would be more inclined to cut expenses wherever possible. In some instances, not only would it help them, but it would also help the environment.
